I've found out that people lie to impress, and to be accepted. The truth may often result in rejection. This is especially prevalent when meeting new people online.

People lie because they are afraid of hurting the other person's feeling. I believe in being honest always and therefore no suprises will come out in the end. In being honest, i feel better as a person. Communication is key.

Because what ever they think they will lose by telling the truth - status, a false impression or view that they have of themselves, losing face, etc. - is more important to them than the truth.
